An invitation to look again at what we mean by separation, information, relationship, possibility and observation — and to notice where the resemblance holds, where it breaks, and what the breaking point reveals.

Correspondence
Is Not Causation.

This is an interdisciplinary artwork and research project, not a scientific paper and not medical guidance. It places established physics beside established biology beside embodied experience, philosophy and interpretation, and asks where meaningful resemblances appear.

Nothing here claims that quantum mechanical phenomena are the biological mechanisms described. Where the resemblance is structural rather than mechanical, that is said plainly. The tension between the two is the artwork.

Each chapter is built in three layers. Physics is what the concept actually means inside physics. Biology is what current research establishes about the body. Correspondence is where the two are set side by side, and where the writing becomes speculative, somatic, mythic.

Every claim carries one of six labels:

Emerging

Supported by developing research, not yet established consensus.

Correspondence

A structural or conceptual similarity between different systems. It does not mean they operate through the same physical mechanism.

Proposition

An interpretation, hypothesis, metaphor or philosophical proposition made by Eden King.

Embodied observation

An observation arising from lived or somatic experience rather than a scientific claim.

Open question

Something worth investigating for which this project is not claiming an answer.

Physics — what the concept means

Established

Send light at a barrier with two openings and it produces an interference pattern, the signature of a wave passing through both. Place a detector that determines which opening each photon went through and the interference disappears. You get two bands, the signature of particles.

Neither description is the whole truth. Which behaviour appears depends on what the system is made to interact with.

One thing is worth stating early, because the rest of this folio depends on it. In physics, measurement means interaction with a detector or an environment. It does not mean a conscious observer. Nothing in the mathematics requires a mind. A photographic plate in an empty room does it perfectly well.

Biology — what the research establishes

Established

The lymphatic system has no central pump. Lymph is moved against a pressure gradient by two mechanisms working together: the intrinsic rhythmic contraction of lymphangions, the short valved segments of the collecting vessels, and extrinsic compression from skeletal muscle, breathing, arterial pulsation and gut movement.

Which mechanism dominates depends on where you are in the body and what that part of the body is doing. Extrinsic pumping leads in the thorax, skeletal muscle and gut wall. Intrinsic contraction carries most other lymphatic beds.

This means movement and breath are not adjacent to lymphatic flow. They are part of the pump.

Correspondence

Two systems, both of which refuse a single description. Light is not sometimes a wave and sometimes a particle in the way a coin is sometimes heads. The description that appears depends on the conditions of the encounter. Lymph is not sometimes fluid and sometimes cargo. The mechanism that carries it depends on what the surrounding body is doing.

The resemblance is structural. It is not a shared mechanism, and no part of lymphatic function is quantum mechanical in any established sense.

Proposition

The wave is not destroyed by becoming the particle. It is completed by it.

Embodied observation

A body kept permanently braced is a body whose extrinsic pump has stopped offering. Stillness is not the opposite of circulation. In this system it is one of its engines.

Rest Is Not the Absence of Activity. It Is the Return to Field.

Breath and movement are established components of lymphatic transport, not adjuncts to it. The proposition is what to make of that: that the state we call rest is a working mode of the body rather than an interruption of one, and that a life which never enters it has switched off half a pump.

Established

Two particles can be prepared so that neither has a definite state of its own, only a shared one. Measure one and the outcome of the other is correlated, no matter how far apart they are.

John Bell showed in 1964 that these correlations are too strong to be explained by any theory in which each particle carried its answer with it all along. Experiments by Clauser, Aspect and Zeilinger confirmed it, closing loophole after loophole. The three shared the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics for it.

And here is the part that is almost always left out. Entanglement cannot be used to send anything. Each side alone sees ordinary random results. The correlation only appears when the two records are brought together and compared, which takes an ordinary signal travelling at ordinary speed. Nothing passes between the particles. Nothing arrives.

Biology — what the research establishes

Established

The body is profoundly distributed, and everything it does to stay coordinated is local and physical. The vagus nerve. Circulating hormones. Cytokines. Microbial metabolites crossing the gut wall. Every one of these is a signal with a route and a speed.

The gut carries a nervous system of its own. Estimates of its size vary by method and region, from roughly 200 million to 600 million neurons, with half a billion the figure most often cited — a population comparable to the spinal cord, capable of running reflexes without instruction from the brain.

The gut-brain axis is real, and it is not telepathy. It is nerves, blood, chemistry and time.

Correspondence — what appears between them

Correspondence

This is the chapter where the resemblance breaks, and the break is more interesting than the likeness.

Entangled particles are inseparable and cannot communicate. A body is inseparable because it does nothing but communicate. Physics gives us wholeness without a message. Physiology gives us wholeness made entirely of messages.

Both are ways of being one thing. They are not the same way. Anything that describes the body as non-local in the quantum sense has crossed from correspondence into error.

Proposition

The neuron does not send a message to the muscle. They were never two things to begin with.

Open question

If separation into parts is a decision the observer makes rather than a fact about the body, what else are we cutting apart out of habit rather than anatomy?

Proposition II
You Are Not Parts That Communicate. You Are a Relationship Measured in Parts.

The distribution is established. The proposition is the reframe: that dividing a body into systems is a convenience of description, useful and real, but a convenience nonetheless — and that practices addressing one node are already addressing something that was never separate.

Established

A quantum system can be in a combination of states at once, and the combination is not ignorance about which one is true. It produces effects, like interference, that no single definite state could produce.

Interaction with a larger environment destroys the combination almost instantly at everyday scales. This is why cats are not in two states and why the cat was proposed as an objection in the first place. Schrödinger was mocking the idea, not describing a cat.

Biology — what the research establishes

Established

Before meeting any pathogen, the immune system builds its receptors by cutting and rejoining gene segments, adding and deleting nucleotides at the joins. The theoretical number of different B cell receptors this could produce is enormous: published estimates run from about 1011 to 1018 depending on what is counted.

And here is the fact that matters more than the size of the number. The theoretical repertoire is larger than the number of B cells a human body can physically contain. The possible always exceeds the held.

When an antigen binds a matching receptor, that cell is selected and proliferates. Macfarlane Burnet described this in 1957 as clonal selection, and it remains the foundation of how adaptive immunity is understood. Autoimmunity is a failure of self-tolerance: the system's ability to distinguish self from not-self breaks down.

Correspondence

The immune repertoire is not a superposition. Each naive B cell has one definite receptor. What the system holds is a population of possibilities, not a single object in many states at once.

But both systems share a shape worth looking at: a field of what could happen, narrowed to one actual outcome by an encounter. And in both, the narrowing is not a loss. It is the whole point of holding the field in the first place.

Proposition

The system knew. It was only waiting for the question.

Open question

What conditions make accurate recognition more likely? The terrain, the microbiome, the regulatory state of the nervous system are all under active investigation and none of it is settled. This project does not claim an answer, and nothing here should be read as guidance for treating an autoimmune condition.

Immunity Is Not Defence. It Is the Accuracy of Recognition.

The mechanism that fights pathogens is the same mechanism that tolerates the self, permits pregnancy and lets a microbiome live inside us. Reading that as discernment rather than aggression is an interpretation, not a finding — but it is an interpretation the biology invites.

What needs a witness and what does not

Established

Two ideas get welded together in popular accounts and they are not the same thing.

The uncertainty principle says that certain pairs of properties cannot both have sharp values. This holds whether or not anyone measures anything. It is a statement about what a quantum state can be, not about clumsy instruments.

Measurement disturbance is a separate matter: interacting with a system changes it. Real, extensively studied, and still not the uncertainty principle.

Neither requires a conscious observer. A detector is enough. The universe was collapsing wave functions for billions of years before anything was looking.

Biology — what the research establishes

Established

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis reads the environment for threat and safety, and its output changes the internal chemistry of the body. Glucocorticoids inhibit the peripheral conversion of T4 into active T3. In serious illness this produces the pattern known as non-thyroidal illness syndrome: T3 falls, reverse T3 rises, without any disease of the thyroid itself.

A meta-analysis of more than 300 studies found that psychological stress reliably alters immune parameters, with chronic stressors associated with the broadest suppression. And across 148 studies covering over 300,000 people, stronger social relationships were associated with a 50% greater likelihood of survival, an effect comparable to well-established mortality risk factors.

Emerging

What none of this establishes is a clean causal chain from being witnessed kindly to restored thyroid conversion in a healthy person. The pathways are real. That specific claim is not demonstrated, and this folio previously made it.

For the record, the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide is iodine deficiency; in iodine-sufficient regions it is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It is not a stress axis problem in disguise.

Here is the asymmetry the whole folio has been walking toward.

A quantum system does not need a witness. A detector, a stray photon, a bath of air molecules will do. Physics is indifferent to whether anyone is home.

A body is not indifferent. Whether it is held in warm attention or under evaluation registers, and the registering has chemistry. That is not the observer effect. That is something physics does not have a word for, and it belongs to living things.

Proposition

Cortisol is not a stress hormone. It is an information molecule. The information is: you are being watched.

Can any living experience be completely separated from the conditions under which it is observed?

Physics Does Not Need a Witness. You Do.

The influence of perceived threat and social connection on physiology is established. The proposition is what to do with the difference: that needing to be witnessed is not a weakness in the design of a body but the thing that makes it a body rather than a mechanism, and that the quality of attention we hold each other in is therefore not a soft question.
